Noise from Rail Operations

Chiltern Railways has been operating a much-reduced service, commensurate with the Government strategy to control the spread of Covid-19. However, in line with the National plan for transport Chiltern Railways will be increasing our operations again from 18th May 2020.

With a reduction in our activity there will have been a reduction in the amount of rail noise generated. Depending on your circumstance, particularly if you are spending more time at your home, you may have more exposure to rail noise overall. Chiltern’s return to closer to normal operations will have an increase in noise.

Chiltern appreciate that rail noise can have an adverse effect on our neighbouring communities, and we work hard to maintain the minimum level we can. Unfortunately, in operating a passenger rail service for those communities some noise is unavoidable. Whilst you may perceive an increase in noise over the coming weeks, the noise we generate will not be any greater than we have previously.

In the background we continue to look at ways to reduce the noise we generate over the longer term, to continue to improve the environment for those living near the railway. Additionally, if we should fail to meet our goal of minimising noise, we will investigate and we will make adjustments and corrections where we can.
