  • What is the Great British Rail Sale?
    • The train companies, working together in partnership, are offering up to 50% off selected Advance tickets on over 1 million journeys from participating retailers.
  • Which train companies will be taking part in the Great British Rail Sale?
    • The following train companies will be taking part in the Great British Rail Sale: Chiltern Railways, Southeastern, London North Eastern Railway, Avanti West Coast, Greater Anglia, South Western Railway, Great Western Railway, Northern, C2C, London Northwestern Railway Railway, Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, West Midlands Railway, Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern, TransPennine Express, Grand Central and Hull Trains.
  • When will the Great British Rail Sale discount be available from?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets will be available from 10.00 on 23rd January – 23.59 on 29th January 2024 for travel between 7th February until 15th March 2024. Tickets must be purchased a minimum of one day in advance of the date of travel.
  • What tickets will be available as part of the Great British Rail Sale?
    • The discount will be available on selected Advance tickets. Where a participating train company does not offer Advance tickets, Off-Peak tickets may be offered as an alternative. Customers should visit nationalrail.co.uk/railsale to see what discounts are available for the location they wish to visit.
  • Where will tickets be made available?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets will be available on train companies operating in England, excluding London Overground, TfL Rail, Merseyrail, Lumo, Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express and Stansted Express. They will be available to purchase from participating train companies and retailers.
  • How do I find out which tickets are available as part of the Great British Rail Sale?
    • Use the National Rail online tool to find out which routes are available. Tickets are limited in number and subject to availability. Once you find a route, click 'buy' to head over to a ticket retailer and check the availability for your journey. Act quickly because when they’re gone, they’re gone.
  • Will the discount be available with all train companies?
    • The discount will be available on selected Advance tickets of all DfT Franchised Train Operators in England, Grand Central and Hull Trains. Where a participating train company does not offer Advance tickets, Off-Peak tickets may be offered as an alternative.
  • How many Great British Rail Sale tickets will be made available?
    • Over 1 million Great British Rail Sale tickets will be available to buy across all operators from 10.00 on 23rd January – 23.59 on 29th January 2024 for travel between 7th February until 15th March 2024..
  • Do I have to buy my tickets in advance, or will there be some available on the day I wish to travel?
    • The Great British Rail Sale tickets will need to be booked at least one day in advance. When they’re gone, they’re gone.
  • Are there any train companies I will not be able to use my Discounted ticket on?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket or for the journey and train company you booked.
  • Will I be able to get more than one discounted train ticket?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis but will not be limited to one per person.
  • Why can’t I find any tickets for my chosen journey in the Great British Rail Sale?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are not available on all routes or from all train companies. Tickets are subject to availability so act quickly because when they’re gone, they’re gone.
  • I can't find any Great British Rail Sale tickets are they all gone?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are not available on all routes, are limited and subject to availability and exclusions. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the retailer’s website, it could be that the journey you’re looking for is either already sold out or not included in the sale.
  • How do I find tickets for the Great British Rail Sale?
    • When you visit nationalrail.co.uk/railsale you will be able to search for Great British Rail Sale fares that will be available to buy from 19th April until 2nd May for travel between 25th April until 27th May.
  • I found the Great British Rail Sale tickets I wanted on the National Rail website but I can’t find them on the train company website, why is this?
    • If you’re unable to find the train ticket you’re looking for on the train company (or train ticket retailer’s) website it may have already sold out. Great British Rail Sale tickets will be advertised as Rail Sale in the journey planner of your train company or train ticket retailer’s website.
  • Can I use my Great British Rail Sale ticket to commute?
    • Yes, your ticket can be used for whatever journey purpose you wish, but you are only able to travel on the date and train shown on your ticket or for the journey you booked.
  • Will I be able to use my Railcard to get 1/3 off the Great British Rail Sale tickets?
    • No, railcards can not be used in conjunction with Rail sale tickets.
  • Can I use my Great British Rail sale ticket on any other service if my chosen train is disrupted or cancelled?
    • If the train you purchased a ticket for is cancelled or is delayed and you still decide to travel, special arrangements will be made to accommodate you on another train (although a seat cannot be guaranteed). If you choose not to travel a refund will be offered on completely unused tickets and you will not be charged an administration fee.
  • How do I reserve a seat for my journey?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are issued with reservation tickets which must be carried when travelling. If the Train Company does not offer seat reservations on the train you are travelling on, the reservation ticket will specify the date and time of travel. In these cases, you may sit in any available seat on the specified train, appropriate to the class of your ticket.
  • Can I use my ticket on any train?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket or for the journey you booked.
  • Does the Great British Rail sale apply to London underground or overground services?

  • Can you get a refund on a Great British Rail Sale ticket?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are non-refundable and cannot be transferred.
  • Can I get a discounted Return ticket?
    • Some Return tickets will be made available during the Great British Rail Sale. However, the majority will be Single tickets only. If you wish to find a Single ticket for the return leg of your journey you will need to search on your train company, or preferred train ticket retailer’s website.
  • Can you get Delay Repay on a Great British Rail Sale ticket?
    • Customers can apply to see if they’re eligible for Delay Repay in times of disruption. If you choose not to travel at the last minute in the event of train delays, you should apply for Delay Repay. You can find information on delay repay here.
  • Can you use a Railcard to save 1/3 on a Great British Rail Sale ticket?
    • No.
  • I was sick so could not use my Great British Rail Sale ticket, can I get a refund?
    • Great British Rail Sale tickets are not refundable unless the service you are booked to travel on is delayed or cancelled and you choose not to travel.
