Tickets across the whole UK rail network are grouped into three main categories:

Buy in advance, specified trains (subject to availability)
Advance tickets are Single (one-way) fares offering great value for money on longer distance journeys. You must book in advance and your ticket is valid only on one specific train time on one specific day.
Railcard discounts apply to all Advance fares.

Buy anytime, travel off -peak
These cheaper fares for travelling when it is less busy, have more restrictions times. On Chiltern Railways, Off-Peak fares are valid on trains arriving into London Marylebone after 1000; there are no futher restrictions.
The Chiltern Railways Super Off-Peak is valid every day on trains scheduled to arrive into London Marylebone after 1300hrs and leaving London after 1030hrs; not valid between 1520hrs and 2000hrs on trains leaving London Marylebone Monday-Friday. No restrictions on Saturdays and Sundays.
Restrictions apply even if you are travelling only for part of the journey.

Buy anytime, travel anytime
These are the most flexible walk-up fares: there are no time restrictions at all.
