Only travel if absolutely essential 21 to 25 June due to Industrial Action and Major engineering work 20 - 23 June.

Due to strike action by the RMT union we will run a very significantly reduced timetable from Tuesday 21st June to Saturday 25th June, and services will finish earlier on Monday 20th June and start later on Sunday 26th June.

On strike days there will be extremely limited availability of staff and as such we will not be able to operate services on most routes. There will be no replacement buses or alternative travel provided. Unfortunately, as we will not be able to position our fleet how we normally would, the significant impact of the strike will also be felt on non-strike days.

In addition, industrial action is taking place on the London Underground on Tuesday 21 June which will mean Chiltern Railways services will be unable to call at stations operated by London Underground.

We therefore, ask customers to seriously consider the necessity of their journey on any day from Tuesday 21 through to Saturday 25 June, and please check your entire journey.

The service will be extremely limited, with the following service pattern from Tuesday 21st June to Saturday 25th June;

  • Between Banbury - Birmingham: No trains in either direction
  • Between London - Banbury: One train per hour in each direction
  • Between London - Oxford: No trains in either direction
  • Between London - Aylesbury via High Wycombe: One train per hour in each direction
  • Between Aylesbury - Amersham: One train per hour in each direction (except Tuesday 21st June when there will be no service on this route)
  • Between London – Aylesbury via Amersham (Metropolitan line): No trains in either direction.

There will be no Chiltern services north of Banbury, between Amersham and London on the Metropolitan line, or to Oxford, between Tuesday 21 June and Saturday 25 June.

The strike coincides with the planned weekday Network Rail engineering work outside Birmingham Moor Street between Monday 20th June – Thursday 23rd June. These works are going ahead, and consequently there will be no services between Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham Snow Hill or Solihull on the Monday 20th. When the strike starts on Tuesday 21st, there will be no train service between Banbury and Birmingham.

On strike days services will start much later and finish much earlier than normal. The service will start from around 07:30, with morning trains not arriving in London until after 09:00. In the afternoon, the last trains will be much earlier than normal, with the last trains from Marylebone running at the following times;

  • 15:10 to Banbury
  • 16:10 to Bicester North
  • 16:45 to Aylesbury Vale Parkway via High Wycombe

Additionally, the railway will be closed between Dorridge and Birmingham Moor Street due to essential mid-week engineering works on Monday 20 June. There will be bus ticket acceptance in that area for Monday 20 June, but not from 21-26 June during the strikes.

We have agreed mutual ticket acceptance with Avanti, West Midlands Trains and GWR for the period of industrial action. Tickets dated between Tuesday 21st June and Saturday 25th June (inclusive), will be accepted on each other’s services for travel by any sensible route on any date between Monday 20th June and Monday 27th June (inclusive).

  • Will stations and ticket offices be open on the strike days?
    • Stations will be open, but ticket offices will be closed.
  • Will I be able to buy an Advance ticket to travel between 21st & 25th?
    • No. Due to pre-planned engineering work, we had previously withdrawn Chiltern Advance tickets from sale for most of the week. As the engineering work is still happening and we will be running far fewer trains than originally planned (with many stations having no train service), we will not be reinstating the sale of Advance tickets on the days affected by the industrial action/special timetables.
  • I have assistance booked over the strike period, what should I do?
    • We will continue to provide assistance for trains that are running, including booked assistance for trains that are confirmed in the timetable. Our advice would be only to travel is absolutely necessary between 21 and 26 June, if you have booked assistance over that period, please contact our customer relations team on 03456 005 165 (selecting option 3 then option 3). We are attempting to proactively contact who have already booked assistance and whose first or only travel leg is on our services. You may receive contact from another train operator if your first or only travel leg is with them.
  • Am I able to get a refund on a ticket purchased to travel over the strike days?
    • Customers who have already purchased tickets can claim a full fee free refund from the original ticket retailer or can amend their ticket; those who travel and are delayed may be entitled to delay repay compensation if they are delayed by 15 mins or more against the published timetable. Season ticket holders can apply for compensation through the Delay Repay scheme if you were unable to use your season ticket due to strike action.
  • What if I have a Flexi Season ticket to use over the strike days?
    • If you are unable to use the tickets on your Flexi Season due to the strikes, you must wait until the Flexi Season has expired. If at this point, there are tickets still unused, you can contact us via the Contact Us form to refund any remaining tickets. If you have activated your ticket and then realised you can not travel, you can contact us from the Contact Us form and we will validate that the ticket was not used by checking tap data and refund that days travel. If you do not use the ticket during strike days but then use them on a future date before the expiry of the ticket, there is no loss to you and therefore no refund due if all tickets used prior to expiry.
  • Will you put alternative transport solutions in place?
    • Unfortunately we are unable to implement any alternative measures of transport over the days of the strike.
  • If I do decide to travel on the days of the strike, will I receive compensation?
    • You will only be eligible for compensation if you are delayed for 15 minutes or more against the published timetable, you can apply for compensation on our new delay repay page.
  • What happens if a ‘Do Not Travel’ message is issued?
    • Customers who have already purchased tickets can claim a full fee free refund from the original ticket retailer or can amend their ticket; Season ticket holders can apply for compensation through the Delay Repay scheme if you were unable to use your season ticket due to strike action.
  • Does the ‘Book with Confidence' scheme still apply?
    • Yes. Customers can also utilise ‘Book with Confidence’ until 30 September 2022 on Advance tickets, which allows customers to amend their travel plans up until 1830 on the day before travel, even if the train is not cancelled, delayed or rescheduled. Please note that very few Advance tickets have been sold for travel on our services over the impacted days.
  • If I purchased a ticket for travel on one of the strike days, will I be able to use for travel on another day?
    • If your ticket is dated for when strikes are impacting service (21-26 June) you can use your ticket on any date between June 20th and 28th.
