Oxford Parkway – London commuters needed for “ticket-free” travel trial

Oxford Parkway – London commuters needed for “ticket-free” travel trial.

Chiltern Railways are looking for a small group of volunteers to pilot an innovative new approach to rail travel that could remove the need for customers to carry rail tickets.

This exciting new app-based concept will allow passengers to use just their smartphones to detect commencement of travel and use Bluetooth to open ticket gates, automatically charging the customer the best price for their journey at the end of the day. At ungated stations geo-location tools are used to locate the customer and the trains travelled on.  In addition, the app will also offer personalised, real-time travel updates, history of journeys, prices and how the best value fare has been calculated.

Chiltern Railways, an Arriva UK Trains company, conceived the “ticket-free” travel idea in 2015 as part of a focus on improving the experience for customers and to make travelling as simple and frictionless as possible.  The project forms part of Arriva’s Digital Train Programme which focuses on four primary areas, connectivity, seamless customer journey, content and analytics.  Arriva UK Trains submitted a proposal through the RSSB Future Railway competition and was awarded funding for six projects of which this pilot scheme is one.  The company has just announced that it will work with innovative travel technology company SilverRail Technologies on the development.

The pilot will be IOS based and conducted on the Chiltern Railways route between Oxford Parkway, Bicester Village, Bicester North and London Marylebone.  Interested commuters should visit the Chiltern Railways website for further information and to sign up.
