Chiltern Railways and the Royal Shakespeare Company are delighted to announce on National Poetry Day the winner of their Young Bard competition 2008.
Chiltern, who run direct services to Stratford upon Avon from London, worked with the RSC to promote literacy and creativity amongst their young passengers. The competition invited children between 7 and 12 to write a poem about holiday and travel. The competition was judged by Lyn Darnley, Head of Text, Voice and Artist Development at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The winning poem titled “Holiday, Holiday” was by Morgan Jones aged 8 from Great Missenden C of E Combined School, Bucks:
Holiday, Holiday
Morgan Jones
Holiday, holiday,
We go we go on a train,
Holiday, holiday. ,
It’s lucky it didn’t rain.
Holiday, holiday
It’s so, so fun
Holiday, holiday
Buy me a bun.
Holiday, holiday
We go to the zoo
Holiday, holiday
The cows go moo
Holiday, holiday
We collect some conkers
Holiday, holiday
My brother goes bonkers
Holiday, holiday
We go to the park,
Holiday, holiday,
We hear a dog bark.
Holiday, holiday,
It’s time to end,
Holiday, holiday,
Go back to my friends.
Morgan will now be invited on a tour of the RSC and will be presented with a Complete Works of Shakespeare signed by Lyn Darnley. The runners up of the competition were by Ella Purvis, aged 7 and by Henry Lapworth, aged 9:
A poem
Ella Purvis
Trains hooting their horns and cars honking a round thing!
Planes roaring to florida and where ever.
Beaches with their golden sand and roaring sea.
Holiday cottages with a coloured door .
Travelling by train is the best if you ask me,
Getting a ticket or using a family railcard.
I use Chiltern Railways a lot !
Trains chugging along the track
Blowing their horns merrily.
Holiday Poem
Henry Lapworth
When I wake up on the morning of my holiday
I`m so excited to be going far away
To see the sea, the beach and sun
I know we`re going to have such fun
Playing football in the sand
Getting brown all nice and tanned
Diving through the waves and foam
Never wanting to go home!
These winning entries will all feature in the next Chiltern Railways passenger newsletter. Chiltern Railways and the RSC would like to thank everyone who entered the competition.
