International basketball at the NIA

September 10th, 2008

Birmingham gets a taste of London 2012 next month when international basketball comes to the National Indoor Arena (NIA).

The Great Britain men's squad takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, September 10th.

Last year the team used the venue to kick-start the promotional campaign to EuroBasket Division A.

Having achieved that they face stiffer competition in order to qualify for the next Olympic Games.

Steve Hansell hopes to step on to the Birmingham court and help steer the team to victory.

"I'm really excited to be part of the GB set up and obviously want to be part of the team as the programme is definitely getting stronger," he said.
"It would mean a lot to play at The NIA for GB."

Bosnia and Herzegovina are ranked 36 places above GB in the world standings, but GB coach Chris Finch says the return to Birmingham will give his team a psychological boost.

Tickets are £10 and £15, available by calling 0871 945 6000.

Getting to Birmingham from the south is easy courtesy of Chiltern Railways services operating throughout the day.
