Food & Drink in Birmingham

When people think about food in Birmingham they think Balti and with good reason. Birmingham is the undisputed home of this Kashmiri curry and aficionados head to Sparkbrook, Balsall Heath and Moseley to enjoy the best Baltis in Birmingham. Knives and forks are provided, but why not try to eat like a proper Balti lover and just use your naan bread or chapatti instead?

Of course, there is more to Birmingham than the Balti and the city is home to a Michelin starred restaurant; Simpson's. Simpson's has been praised by critics and continues to go from strength to strength. Local chef, Glynn Purnell, continues to impress at his latest restaurant, Purnell's and local favourite, Opus, has a strong reputation for producing fine food from British sourced, seasonal and free range ingredients. City centre bistro, Chez Jules is highly recommended by locals for serving up high quality French food at reasonable prices.

Birmingham's new reputation as a city for food lovers has been cemented by the BBC's Good Food Summer show being an annual visitor to the National Exhibition Centre. The 2008 show is on from the 11th to the 15th of June and will feature big name celebrity chefs and a host of exhibitors.
